2011 CEREMONIAL PITCHERS

Jacob Belcher - 2x Iraqi War Veteran, Member of Midnight Sun Goldpanners
Set to throw out first pitch in honor of comrades

Jacob Belcher is the personification of the Goldpanners' focus this Midnight Sun Game.  Having served two tours of duty in Iraq - and survivor of a helicopter crash  - Jacob has beaten the odds (much like those who survive Fairbanks winters).    Upon his return home he resumed his baseball career.    In 2011, Jacob is an outfielder with the Midnight Sun Goldpanners. Though still needing occasional invasive treatments for a back injured by the crash of his troop transport, Belcher always returns to the diamond as quickly as possible.  Jacob Belcher will be throwing out the first pitch on Tuesday night in honor of those who couldn't return to play the game.

SEAN TIMMONS - CEREMONIAL MIDNIGHT PITCH

2009: TIMMONS GETS MSG SAVE TO GO WITH THREE WINS

Game Ends on Called Third Strike by Timmons 2009 Pics

Fairbanksan Sean Timmons has had a career that stands out so prominently, he deserves a category of his own.  To date, Timmons has appeared in a Panners uniform for a record 14 seasons.  Highlights of Sean's career include his becoming the very first native Alaskan to be named the ABL Player of the Year (in 2003).  Sean is the only Panner to win four MVP awards.  He is also the only pitcher to ever cross the 300-inning mark for the club.  Among many records, Sean is the all-time games, innings, strikeouts and wins leader.   He is also only the second active ballplayer to serve the Alaska Goldpanners organization on the Board of Directors.

Sean is the all-time winningest pitcher in the 106 year history of the Midnight Sun Game. He has three wins and a save in his sun game career.

AWARDEES: Carroll Barber (Red Boucher Community Achievement); The Comet Club (Supporter Award - Sponsor of the Year);  Cathy Rose (Supporter Award - Fan of the Year)

FACTS & FIGURES

  • EVENT: 2011 will see the 106th playing of the Midnight Sun Baseball Game (1906-2011).   Though the game is played through the hour of midnight, artificial lights are never used -- and have never been used in the 100+ year history of the event.  Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, and provides nearly continuous light throughout the evening in Fairbanks, which is 150 miles south of the arctic circle.  This phenomenon is very rare, and cannot be experienced in Anchorage.  The light fades towards the middle of the game, but usually returns by the end of the game.
